Two Legs Amputee. A Moral Dilemma?

May 17, 2008

Is it a moral dilemma to let someone who uses two artificial blades as legs to run in the Beijing Olympics? Well, it depends from what point of view you look at it. If you are all for the love of the sport, the success story of the Olympic Games and for equality of disable people in all matters, then it is easy to answer no, it is not a moral dilemma and Oscar Pistorious should be allowed to compete in every event he desires to enter.

However, life is not always as nice and fair as everyone would like it to be. Just the fact that Oscar uses artificial blades as legs, and even though he is still nearly one second away from the qualifying time to participate in the Beijing Olympics, many runners are reluctant to having him run for a spot in the Olympics. Think about it. When you run, walk or do anything with your legs, your ankle and knees are what provides support to your body. Everyone knows that running and even walking put a tremendous pressure on your ankles and knees, especially when you do it at a high level of intensity like sprinters. Now, even though there’s a study done by a MIT professor showing the blades Oscar uses does not give him any advantage nor saves him energy, but If I have to run against anyone capable of running as fast as Oscar with artificial blades, I would argue that I AM the one in a disadvantage position.

Lets make it clear, I’m not going to run against Oscar, nor do I want to, so let me say that if a permission has been granted for him to qualify for the Olympics - and in fact he actually qualifies- I will be in front of the TV come August to see him perform. It will be a day marked in history, and I would want to be a witness of it.
