Lester’s no-no among others

May 20, 2008

Jon Lester has been marked in baseballs history. Throwing a no-hitter got him there. But what makes it more impressive is the road he traveled to get to this point on his career. Just to point it out plain and simple; he survived cancer, and exactly a year ago he was making a come back to baseball by pitching in triple A.

He has proven that talent, perseverance, passion for the game, and just a great character is needed to do what he has done over the last 3 years. Maybe surviving cancer has had a positive impact on his life and the way he performs on the mound. That determination to beat cancer in comparison to beat the batter standing on the plate makes pitching a lot easier. On one hand, you are fighting for your life, and on the other you are throwing a baseball into history.

So he has a World Series ring, a no-hitter, and a cancer-free diagnosis from doctors. Which one is more impressive? Easy to say it is surviving cancer the most impressive of all. But it must be said that all three came within 18 months, so he IS the impressive one.

My hat off to the Boston Red Sox organization for not trading him during the off-season for Johan Santana.
